Senior Kia
Wright and sophomore Monique
McLean were honored Friday night at the 2007 BIG EAST Women's
Basketball Banquet as they were named to the all-conference teams.
Wright received second team honors, while McLean earned a place on
the honorable mention squad.
Wright, a consensus preseason All-BIG EAST selection and
All-America candidate, leads the BIG EAST and Red Storm in assists,
averaging 5.7 per game, and is second on the squad in points per
game (14.3). The veteran guard has posted double-digit points in 15
games this season and has had four 20-point games. Wright scored
her 1,000th career point on Jan. 21 vs. Connecticut and now has
1,172 for her career. Currently in 10th place on St. John's
all-time scoring chart, she needs 19 points to surpass Kerry
Karst's (1979-82) total of 1,190 and move into ninth place.
McLean leads St. John's in scoring, averaging 16.2 points per
game and has notched four double-doubles and four 20+ point efforts
in 22 starts. She is second on the squad in assists and steals per
game with 3.2 and 1.9 respectively, and is team's leader in free
throw average (.828). McLean has posted double-digits in 23 of 24
games and is on a 17-game double-figure scoring streak, which is
tied for tops in the BIG EAST.
The 12th-seeded St. John’s University women’s basketball team
will face No. 5 seed Louisville Saturday at noon in the first round
of the 2007 BIG EAST Tournament, being played at the Hartford Civic
Center. The Red Storm earned its fourth-straight berth to the
conference championship and is looking for its second-straight
quarterfinal appearance. The game is part of the BIG EAST Regional
Television Package, and will air on SportsNet New York (SNY) in the
New York area with Brooke Weisbrod and John Rooke calling the
action. In addition, the BIG EAST will provide a variety of
coverage on www.bigeast.org,
including streaming broadcasts of each first round game.
