The St. John’s women’s basketball team got its first victory of
the season Saturday at the Dead River Company Classic on the campus
of the University of Maine, a 73-49 win over Brown in the
consolation game of the tournament. Angel
Tate led the Red Storm with 17 points and 12 rebounds,
while Joy McCorvey had 13 points.
The Red Storm (1-3) held a 37-20 advantage at the half behind
the strong play of its sophomore class, Tate and Monique
McLean. Tate was 4-for-5 from the field in the first
stanza for nine points, while McLean also had nine points and
knocked down two 3-pointers in the first half.
St. John’s continued to extend its lead following the
intermission and enjoyed a 20-point margin for most of the second
half. The Red Storm won by an eventual final score of 73-49.
Brown (1-4) was led by Courtney Lee with 12 points.
Tate finished the game shooting 8-for-11 from the field and also
had two blocks. Kia Wright, meanwhile, just missed
a double-double with nine points and 10 assists.
Also having strong outings for the Red Storm was Tiina Sten, who
tallied 12 points, and McLean, who finished with 12 points and
eight rebounds. Freshman point guard Nikki Jo
Rotolo had seven points, seven rebounds and four steals in
an all-around effort.
St. John’s is back in action Wednesday night when it travels to
Niagara for a non-conference tilt. Tipoff is 7 p.m.
