Georgetown edged St. John’s in BIG EAST women’s basketball
action Saturday afternoon at Carnesecca Arena, 53-45. Angel
Tate posted her fourth double-double of the year (12
points, 12 rebounds), while Monique McLean added
12 points to lead the Red Storm.
With the loss, St. John’s record went to 4-10 (0-3 BIG EAST),
while Georgetown improved to 11-5 (1-2 BIG EAST). The Hoyas were
led by Kristin Heidloff with 15 points and four steals.
St. John’s led at halftime, 26-20, after a balanced offensive
period. Tiina Sten had seven of her nine points in
the first stanza, while Kia Wright scored six of
her seven. The Red Storm out-rebounded the Hoyas in the first half,
21-15, to help take the six-point lead into the locker room.
Sten opened the second half with a jumpshot to give St. John’s
its largest lead of the game, 28-20. From there, Georgetown went on
a 12-4 run to tie the game at 32-32 with 13:33 to play.
Heidloff hit her first 3-pointer of the game at 11:51 to break
open the tie and give the Hoyas a 35-32 lead. The visitors would
never trail again, as they outscored the Red Storm 33-19 in the
second half and won by a final score of 53-45.
Rookie Joy McCorvey turned in another hustling
performance, grabbing six rebounds, four offensive.
The Red Storm has a week off before traveling to Pittsburgh
Saturday afternoon for a 1:30 p.m. game.
