The St. John’s women’s basketball team fell to South Florida,
74-61, Saturday at the Sun Dome. Angel Tate led
the Red Storm with 18 points and nine rebounds, while
Monique McLean added 16 points. Jessica Dickson
led South Florida with 28 points, 18 in the second half, and the
St. John’s comeback fell short in a tough road environment.
With the setback, the Red Storm’s record moved to 7-13 overall,
3-6 in the BIG EAST. South Florida, meanwhile, improved to 17-5,
7-2 in the conference.
The first half was an exciting and fast-paced affair that
featured eight ties and six lead changes. Nikki Jo
Rotolo finished a driving layup at the 10:36 mark that
gave St. John’s its largest lead of the half, 18-12. The Bulls
responded with an 8-0 run to take a 20-18 lead, but the Red Storm
had an answer and eventually reclaimed the lead at 28-26 with a
Joy McCorvey layup.
To end the half, South Florida took advantage of St. John’s foul
trouble (Kia Wright, Monique McLean and Tiina Sten all had three
fouls before halftime) and converted free throws to take a 32-31
lead into the locker room.
In the second half, Jessica Dickson scored 18 of her total 28
points and the Bulls took advantage of second half Red Storm
turnovers to capture the 74-61 victory.
For St. John’s, Tiina Sten added 13 points and five rebounds,
while Joy McCorvey netted seven points and grabbed five
rebounds.
Despite foul trouble and only playing 28 minutes, senior guard
Kia Wright had six assists.
St. John’s continues its two-game road swing Tuesday night when
it travels to West Virginia for a 7 p.m. game with the
Mountaineers.
