MORGANTOWN, W.Va.
The St. John’s women’s basketball team fell to West Virginia,
66-42, Tuesday night at The WVU Coliseum. Monique McLean and Kia
Wright led the Red Storm with 12 and nine points,
respectively.
Yinka Sanni scored six-straight points for West Virginia to open
the game, before St. John’s got its first points off of two free
throws by Tiina Sten to make the Mountaineers lead 8-2 at the
16-minute mark.
Following an official timeout, WVU went on a 12-5 run over the
next seven minutes to take a 20-7 lead with 9:26 left in the half.
St. John’s responded with a layup by Kia Wright on its next
possession to pull within 11 points and eventually closed to within
nine points later in the half, but the Mountaineers held their
ground to take a 35-20 lead at halftime.
Monique McLean had eight points in the first period to lead St.
John’s, but the Red Storm shot just 28 percent from the field
compared to West Virginia’s 45 percent.
West Virginia continued to knock down shots and out-rebound the
Red Storm in the second half, and won by a final score of 66-42.
The Mountaineers were led by Laquita Owens with 17
points.
St. John’s returns home to Carnesecca Arena for a game against
Providence on Saturday, Feb. 10. Tipoff is at 2 p.m.
