Kia Wright led four Red Storm players in double
figures with 19 points, but St. John’s fell to Providence, 93-77,
Saturday at Carnesecca Arena. Monique McLean
added 15 points, while Joy McCorvey and
Angel Tate had 13 points and eight rebounds apiece
for the Red Storm.
St. John’s enjoyed as much as an 18-point lead early in the
first half, 37-19, before Providence ended the period by going on a
23-7 run to pull within 44-42 at halftime.
In the second half, the teams traded baskets and St. John’s
clung to its lead until the 12-minute mark when the Friars took
their first lead of the game on a jumper by Kendria Holmes,
59-51.
From there, the Friars never trailed again and won going away by
a final score of 93-77. Chelsea Marandola led Providence with 19
points, while Catherine Bove registered a double-double with 17
points and 14 rebounds.
McLean, meanwhile also had a double-double (her fourth of the
year) by adding 10 rebounds.
St. John’s hits the road Tuesday when it plays Marquette at 8
p.m.
