No. 22/21 Marquette pulled away in the second half to defeat St.
John’s, 69-58, Tuesday night at the Al McGuire Center. The Red
Storm was led by Kia Wright with 17 points.
With the loss, St. John’s record went to 7-16 overall, 3-9 in
BIG EAST play, while Marquette improved to 21-4, 9-3.
St. John’s jumped out to an early 8-0 lead, as four different
players scored field goals and the Red Storm kept Marquette off the
offensive glass. The Golden Eagles responded to their sluggish
start with a 23-14 run and took their first lead with a minute left
to play in the half, 23-22, on a Christina Quaye layup.
Another Quaye layup with 2.5 seconds left gave Marquette its
largest lead of the half, 25-22, but St. John’s responded in
dramatic fashion as Kia Wright hit a running halfcourt shot to tie
the game at intermission.
St. John’s kept it close for much of the second half, until the
Golden Eagles went on a 11-1 run with six minutes left and took
their largest lead of the game at 64-51. Wright got the game back
within 10 points with a three-point play on a fast break layup with
4:15 left to play, but St. John’s would get no closer.
Marquette held its ground to win by a final score of 69-58. Its
leading scorer was Christina Quaye with 21 points.
St. John’s returns to Carnesecca Arena when it hosts Cincinnati
Saturday. Tipoff is 2 p.m.
