LOUISVILLE, Ky.
In a tough game at a hostile road environment, the St. John’s
women’s basketball team fell to No. 21/23 Louisville, 91-62,
Tuesday at Freedom Hall. Joy McCorvey led the Red
Storm with 10 points and 11 rebounds for her third career
double-double, while Monique McLean added 17
points for St. John’s.
With the setback, St. John’s record went to 8-17, 4-10 in the
BIG EAST, while the Cardinals improved to 23-5, 9-5 in the
league.
Louisville held a slight 32-31 lead after the first half, which
featured eight lead changes and five ties. McCorvey hauled down 11
first-half rebounds in addition to limiting the BIG EAST’s leading
scorer, Angel McCoughtry, to just 2-of-4 from the field
defensively.
In the second half, the teams continued to trade baskets until
the Cardinals went on a 9-0 run to take a nine-point lead with
13:05 left in the half, 51-42. Louisville continued to pull away
throughout the second half and McCoughtry, Helen Johnson and Jazz
Covington all found their offensive rhythms to lead the Cardinals
to the 91-62 victory.
Johnson finished with 21 points, while McCoughtry and Covington
added 19 and 17, respectively.
For St. John’s, guard Kia Wright had an
all-around night with 14 points, seven assists and five rebounds,
while Tiina Sten added 10 points.
Angel Tate contributed a solid 10 points and
four rebounds.
St. John’s returns to action on Saturday at Seton Hall. Tipoff
is 2 p.m.
