HARTFORD, Conn.
Angel Tate's double-double effort of 13 points and 11 rebounds
was not enough Saturday, as the St. John's women's basketball team
fell to Louisville, 68-54, in the first round of the BIG EAST
Tournament at the Hartford Civic Center.
In addition to Tate's fifth double-double of the year, St.
John's got 22 points from junior Tiina Sten, who was 8-for-16 from
the field in addition to blocking three shots. Kia Wright added
nine points and four rebounds for the Red Storm.
Louisville jumped out to an early lead and got solid
contributions from BIG EAST Player of the Year Angel McCoughtry (15
points), Jazz Covington (11 points, eight rebounds) and Helen
Johnson (10 points).
St. John's cut a second-half double-digit lead down to seven
points on a steal and layup by Monique McLean with eight minutes to
play, 53-46, but got no closer.
