Queens, NY
Olympic Gold Medalists and Women’s World Cup Champions Mia Hamm,
Julie Foudy, Kristine Lilly and Joy Fawcett teamed up with St.
John’s women’s soccer alumni to play the FDNY Soccer Club to a 3-3
tie in a charity match to benefit the Firefighter Sergio G.
Villanueva Soccer Foundation. The match, which featured some of the
greatest names of all time in women’s soccer history, as well as
New York’s bravest from all five boroughs, was exciting from start
to finish and gave more than 2,000 fans at Belson Stadium something
to cheer about.
Villanueva was a member of the FDNY Soccer Club and firefighter
who lost his life saving others on September 11, 2001. Through the
foundation, the FDNY has been able to provide young athletes with
scholarships, training and educational opportunities.
Two goals from Joy Fawcett and one from Julie Foudy put the
ladies on the scoreboard. On the Soccer Club side, Thomas Meagher
scored two goals and Thomas Hunt added one.
