QUEENS, N.Y.
Krystle Jalalian, Kaitlin Haas
and Kelly McConnell all scored goals and the St.
John’s women’s soccer team defeated Hofstra, 3-1, in a preseason
exhibition Saturday afternoon at Belson Stadium.
For the Red Storm, it was the final preseason tune-up before it
officially kicks off the 2007 campaign on Friday, Aug. 31 by
hosting Fairleigh Dickinson at 4 p.m.
Sophomore defender Vaila Barsley got the Red
Storm offense going when she found Jalalian with a free kick in the
first of three 30-minute periods. Jalalian won the ball, settled it
and finished her shot low and to the right to give St. John’s a 1-0
lead.
In the second period, junior goalkeeper Rebecca
Capinera entered the game to relieve starter Jaime
Beran. It was Capinera’s first action in goal since
suffering a season-ending injury last season following the first
game of 2006.
St. John’s made it 2-0 moments later on the goal of the day, a
left-footed, perfectly placed shot by Haas into the upper right
corner of the goal. She was assisted by Alicia
Barnaby and Kristine Cunningham.
Hofstra got on the board with a Liz Guise goal with less than
two minutes left in the second period. She finished a free kick
just inside midfield taken by Sue Weber.
St. John’s got its insurance goal, however, in the third period
when McConnell finished a through pass from freshman Maria
DeMatteo to give the Red Storm its final 3-1 lead.
The Red Storm hosts the Knights of Fairleigh Dickinson Friday,
Aug. 25 at 4 p.m. The men’s soccer team will also take on the
Knights at 8 p.m. at Belson Stadium.
