QUEENS, N.Y.
The St. John’s women’s soccer team opened its season in
high-scoring fashion Friday, defeating Fairleigh Dickinson 3-1 at
Belson Stadium. Erin Bohn, Raelynne
Lee and Krystle Jalalian all scored goals
while Nicole Canning added an assist for her first
collegiate point.
After a scoreless first half, the Red Storm got on the
board in the 72nd minute when Bohn stepped up and blasted a free
kick just outside the penalty box into the upper left corner of the
net. The kick was the result of a handball by the Fairleigh
Dickinson goalkeeper, Rachel Derrico, outside her designated
keeper’s box.
Lee scored the first goal of her young college career less than
five minutes later after settling a pass from Canning and using
some fancy footwork to get a shot off against the FDU
defender. Her shot beat Derrico to her right to put the Red
Storm up 2-0.
Knights Meredith King and Amanda Wheeler connected on a free
kick in the 76th minute to make the score 2-1, but St. John’s
responded in the 84th minute with a goal from Jalalian. The senior
forward gathered her own rebound and finished the shot far
post.
St. John’s improved to 1-0 on the young season and won its
season-opener for the second year in a row, while Fairleigh
Dickinson’s record dropped to 0-1.
The Red Storm out-shot the Knights, 20-3, and held a 7-0
advantage in corner kicks. Junior keeper Rebecca
Capinera got the win after playing the second half, while
Jaime Beran got the starting nod and did not allow
a goal in the first half.
St. John’s continues its first weekend of action on Sunday when
it hosts Cornell at 1 p.m. at Belson Stadium.
