QUEENS, N.Y.
Krystle Jalalian scored two goals and assisted
on another to lead the St. John’s women’s soccer team to a 4-0
shutout of Cornell Sunday afternoon at Belson Stadium.
The senior forward’s performance highlighted a 2-0
season-opening weekend for St. John’s, as she finished with three
goals and an assist for the two weekend wins. The 4-0 win for St.
John’s over Cornell was its highest goal output since the 2004
season.
The Red Storm dominated the offensive statistics of the day,
out-shooting Cornell, 14-1, and holding a 6-0 advantage on corner
kicks. Raelynne Lee and Kelly
McConnell had the other two St. John’s goals.
McConnell put St. John’s on the board just over two minutes into
the game, settling a loose ball in the Cornell penalty box and
beating Big Red goalkeeper Jodi Palmer high over her left
shoulder.
In the 33rd minute, Jalalian tallied her first goal when
she finished an Amanda Pasciolla cross from the
left sideline and one-timed into the net.
Jalalian passed on the favor to Lee in the first minute of the
second half, crossing the ball from the right side. The
freshman midfielder finished to the lower right corner to put St.
John’s up, 3-0. In her first collegiate weekend, Lee totaled two
goals.
Jalalian then put the finishing touch on the Red Storm victory
in the 51st minute, gathering control of her own rebound and
finishing on the second try.
In goal for the Red Storm, junior Rebecca
Capinera got the start and the victory, while senior
Jaime Beran preserved the shutout in the second
half. For Cornell, Palmer tallied seven saves.
The Red Storm defense was stellar, as starters Vaila
Barsley, Tara Mendoza, Jacklyn
James and Julianna Cohen and reserves
Nicole Doran, Courtney Lane and
Kristine Cunningham allowed just a single Big Red
shot.
Head coach Ian Stone also got solid minutes
from Erin Bohn and Maria
DeMatteo, who each recorded a shot, and Kaitlin
Haas, who had two shots on goal.
With the win, St. John’s improved to 2-0, while Cornell’s record
dropped to 0-2.
The Red Storm is in action on Friday, Sept. 7, when it heads to
Sacred Heart for a 4 p.m. game, then back at Belson Stadium on
Sunday when it hosts Miami (Ohio).
