Michele Canning is entering her fourth season as an assistant
coach for the Red Storm. As a member of head coach Ian Stone’s
staff since 2004, Canning has been a part of several successful Red
Storm campaigns, including last year’s team that won a school
record five BIG EAST contests.
Canning came to St. John’s after three seasons as an assistant
coach at Seton Hall, where she was also a standout on the Pirates’
women’s soccer team from 1994-98.
Prior to her time coaching at Seton Hall, Canning served for one
season as an assistant at Florida Atlantic University. She also
served as the Assistant Director of Coaching Services for the Long
Island Lady Riders, members of the W-league, where she assisted in
coaching, training and directing the Lady Riders’ camps.
In 2004, she was a part of the Region I Camp staff, and in 2005
served as an assistant coach for the Eastern New York Olympic
Development Under-17 team.
Canning began her coaching career with the New Jersey Olympic
Development Program (ODP) Under-19 team. She then coached with the
Long Island Junior Soccer League, working as head coach for the
Under-15 Girls Team.
In 1994, she entered Seton Hall and was a member of the
inaugural women’s soccer team. She finished her career tied for
fifth in scoring (21 points) and goals (8), including netting the
program’s first-ever goal.
Canning has an Advanced National Coaching Diploma from the
National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
