QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John’s softball team won a pair of game
in its home opening doubleheader against Rider. The Red Storm
scored 16 runs over the two games, taking game one, 8-6, and game
two, 8-1.
Game One:
St. John’s picked up its fourth victory of the season in its home
opener at Red Storm Field, 8-6, over the visiting Rider Broncs.
The Red Storm used a six run fifth inning to seal the game.
Rookie Ona Halladay led off the
frame with a single to shallow left field and hits kept pouring in
as Loren Anguiano, Brandy Reyes, Spring Montgomery and Shauntaine Harris each connected. Harris
fired her second consecutive double of the game, driving in St.
John’s seventh and eighth runs. The Red Storm batted around in the
fifth, as Halladay recorded the last out. St. John’s headed into
the last two innings with an 8-4 lead.
The Broncs battled back in the seventh, scoring two runs on two
hits, but fell short by a final score of 8-6.
Senior pitcher Kim Lerch earned
her third win of the season in the circle, tossing a complete seven
innings and giving up only two earned runs.
Offensively, St. John’s posted a season-high 10 hits, receiving
contributions from eight of its nine batters. Harris was 2-for-3
with four RBI while Montgomery was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a
run.
Game Two:
Rider jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Derrin
Minunni doubled to center field, driving in Tiffany
Day-Neutill.
The Red Storm answered right back in the side as Anguiano
doubled to center field and scored on a sacrifice fly by Reyes.
Harris stayed hot in the second inning and scored on an infield
singled by Bionka King as the Red
Storm went ahead, 2-1.
St. John’s continued to add to its lead in the third inning and
fourth innings. Halladay rocketed her first career double down the
leftfield line in the third, driving in a pair of runs. Sophomore
Roxann Struble used the fourth
inning to blast a two-run home run, her second of the season and
first at Red Storm Field. Danielle
Estrada followed up with a double down the leftfield line.
She tacked on the Red Storm’s eighth run of game two as she crossed
the plate on a wild pitch.
In the circle, Lisa Geer
captured her second win of the season. She allowed only one earned
run on eight hits.
The Red Storm’s 10 hits in game one was a season-high until they
recorded 14 in game two.
