Queens, N.Y. - The St. John's University softball team has been
giving back to the community in a big way. In the last month, the
Red Storm has taken part in three charitable events.
To kick off the month's community service outreach, the softball
team helped raise $200 for the St. John's Breast Cancer Walk. The
entire team was on hand to take part in the walk on Oct. 16., along
with other members of the St. John's community.
Next up, the team lent a hand to "Momma's House," a charitable
organization designed to help young mothers and their babies.
Momma's House places young mothers and their children into homes
for approximately one year, giving those mothers the opportunity
and support needed to continue to care for their children. The Red
Storm spent the afternoon renovating a new home for Momma's House,
by painting, cleaning and preparing the house for a new family's
arrival.
The team closed out October with its annual trip to the St.
Mary's Children Hospital. Each year the Red Storm visits the
children of St. Mary's in hopes of giving them a true Halloween
experience. Team members dressed up in various costumes for the
day-trip and spent one-on-one time with a group of more than 20
kids.
"It feels good to have a chance to give back to the community,"
said head coach
Debbie DeJong. "It's great to see the impact we can have on
peoples lives and when you sit back at the end of the day, you
realize this is what life is really all about."
