QUEENS, N.Y. (July 23, 2007) – Amy Kvilhaug, head coach of the
St. John’s softball team, announced the hiring of assistant coach
Amanda Walling for the 2007-08 season.
Walling, a native of Charleston, S.C., played four years under
Kvilhaug at Radford University in Radford, Va. Before graduating in
2006, Walling was an integral member of Radford’s first ever,
40-win season. She batted .319 with a team-high seven home runs, 33
RBI, 32 runs and 60 hits. Walling also posted a league-best .995
fielding percentage and caught a pitching staff with the 10th best
ERA in the nation. Radford made its first appearance in a Big South
Championship game with Walling behind the plate.
“It has been great reuniting with Amanda as a colleague,” said
Kvilhaug. “I have always had the utmost respect for her leadership,
wealth of knowledge, softball game sense and motivation to succeed.
Amanda is familiar with my style of coaching so I am confident in a
smooth transition to the program. She is going to be a great role
model for the student-athletes and I am excited about her joining
our staff.”
Walling was selected as a Virginia Sports Information Directors
(VaSID) all-state second team catcher her senior season, in
addition to earning All-Big South First Team honors in 2005 and
2006. She finished her career ranked fifth in school history with
168 hits and 11 home runs.
“I am very excited to be joining the Red Storm coaching staff,”
said Walling. “Coach Kvilhaug and assistant coach Laura Taylor are
two very knowledgeable coaches. I know I will learn a great deal
from them this season. I also look forward to coaching a very
talented group of student-athletes.
Walling’s responsibilities with the Red Storm will include
working with the catchers and outfielders. She will also handle
administrative responsibilities, such as team travel, opponent
scouting and recruiting.
