Austin, Texas – The Red Storm softball team took a heart breaking 6-4 loss to No. 10 Texas at the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational on Friday night. After leading 4-3 through the top of the seventh inning, St. John’s fell behind on a three-run home run by Texas’s Tallie Thrasher.

The No. 10 Texas Longhorns took the lead in the top of the third inning off of an RBI triple from Shannon Thomas. Loryn Johnson drove in Thomas in the next at bat, giving Texas a 2-0 advantage early on. The Red Storm would not get out of the inning before giving up one more run.

St. John’s battled back in the bottom of the frame when freshman Ona Halladay led off with a ground ball single up the middle of the field. Senior Tami Hill reached first base on a bunt single with no outs and Shauntaine Harris advanced the runners to second and third. With the heart of the lineup due up to the plate, the Red Storm posted its first run of the day on a Loren Anguiano RBI single. Danielle Estrada loaded the bases for the Red Storm with a shot up the left field line, continuing the rally. Anguiano scored St. John’s second run on a wild pitch by the Longhorn’s Torrey Schroeder. Rookie Brandy Reyes came through with her second hit of the game, driving in both Spring Montgomery and Danielle Estrada and giving the Red Storm control of the game, 4-3.

The Longhorns would not go down quietly though, as they mounted a seventh inning, three-run comeback. Tallie Thrasher’s three-run home run with two outs recorded in the frame gave Texas a 6-4 victory.

In the circle, junior Lisa Geer battled over seven innings, only allowing runs in the third and seventh innings.

Reyes was three-for-three against Texas with two RBI. All but two of St. John’s starting lineup recorded a hit in the game as the team combined for eight overall.

The Red Storm will continue its play in the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational on Saturday, March 3 when it takes on Sam Houston at 11 a.m.
