Austin, Texas – The St. John’s softball team
dropped another tightly contested game Saturday afternoon when they
lost to Sam Houston, 5-4, at the Time Warner Cable Texas
Invitational. The score was tied in the seventh inning but the
Bearkat’s Tanya Hooser came through with the winning hit.
In the bottom of the second inning, Sam Houston strung together
three runs to take the early lead. Lauren Burns drove in the first
run with a shot to left field and two batters later, Amy Brown’s
two run-single put the Bearkats up, 3-0. Sam Houston posted another
run in the fourth inning to go ahead 4-0.
The Red Storm mounted a comeback in the top of the sixth inning
when rookie Brandy Reyes fired a two RBI double
with one out. In her first appearance of the weekend, freshman
Tiffany D’Alessandro just missed capturing her
first career-home run, instead settling for an RBI double that put
up St. John’s third run of the inning. Junior pitcher Lisa
Geer tied the game with a single down the left field line
that brought in D’Alessandro.
Sam Houston secured the victory when Tanya Hooser drove in the
winning run. The final score was 5-4.
St. John’s will play the first seeded team in the Texas
Invitational at 7:30 p.m.
