SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The St. John’s softball team dropped a pair
of games at Notre Dame on Saturday, March 24, in the BIG EAST
conference opener for both teams. The Red Storm fell 8-0 (6), in
game one and 3-0 in game two.
Game One:
Notre Dame’s Katie Laing broke open a scoreless game in the middle
of the third inning with a two-RBI double. Christine Lux plated
Laing two batters later as the Irish took a 3-0 lead.
Notre Dame put together another three-run inning in the fifth.
Lux was back at work for the Irish, firing another two-run double.
Notre Dame took a 6-0 lead into the final two innings of the
game.
The game ended in the bottom of the sixth inning when Notre
Dame’s Erin Glasco drove in the final two runs of the game. The
Irish defeated the Red Storm, 8-0, in the conference opener for
both teams.
Red Storm seniors Loren Anguiano and
Tami Hill each had a hit in the game, but St.
John’s was not able to capitalize on any of it scoring
opportunities, stranding five.
Game Two:
The Red Storm threatened in the top of the fourth inning after
Spring Montgomery was walked and Brandy
Reyes ripped one up the middle with one out. St. John’s
was not able to bring home any runs in the frame.
Notre Dame also came alive in the fourth, as Lux’s sacrifice fly
scored Sara Smith and the Irish’s first run of the game. Linda
Kohan’s sacrifice fly one inning later brought in another run for
Notre Dame, making it a 2-0 game.
Reyes fired a double in the sixth inning for her third hit of
the game. Two of St. John’s rookies, Reyes and Ona
Halladay, accounted for all four of the Red Storm’s
hits.
The Irish scored its final run of the game on a Red Storm error
and went on to win, 3-0, despite another strong pitching
performance from St. John’s senior Kim Lerch.
The Red Storm will continue its BIG EAST weekend when it heads
to Chicago, Ill., to take on DePaul. The doubleheader will begin at
11 a.m.
