CHICAGO, Ill. – The St. John’s softball team dropped a pair of
games against No. 24 DePaul in continued BIG EAST action. Despite a
game one grand slam from Roxann Struble, St. John’s fell, 8-5.
Senior pitcher Kim Lerch got the start in game two, fanning six,
but ultimately taking a 4-1 loss.
Game One:
Red Storm sophomore Roxann Struble crushed her
first collegiate home run – a grand slam – in the first inning of
action against the No. 24 DePaul Blue Demons. Senior Tami
Hill put things in motion when she reached first on an
infield single. Loren Anguiano followed up with a
hit through the gap in left field and Spring
Montgomery reached on a fielder’s choice. The stage was
set for Struble and she belted the first pitch she saw into the
stands in left field for her first-career long ball, giving St.
John’s a 4-0 lead early in the game.
DePaul answered right back, scoring its first run when Marcy
Wilus drove in Megan Sheaks with a single to right field. Sandy
Vojak’s three run homer evened up to the score, 4-4.
The Blue Demons tacked on another three runs in the second to go
ahead 7-4. Senior pitcher Kim Lerch replaced
junior Lisa Geer in the circle with two outs in
the frame. Wilus homered for her second hit of the day, putting up
DePaul’s seventh run.
The home run derby continued as the Red Strom’s Anguiano blasted
a solo home run in the top of the third. The Red Strom posted seven
hits overall in game one.
St. John’s put runners on in the seventh inning but was not able
to plate a run, dropping an 8-5 contest.
Game Two:
St. John’s and DePaul took a scoreless game into the middle
of the fifth inning. The Blue Demons scored their first run of the
day on a Red Storm error. DePaul’s Tarulli Fischer added another
two runs to the board with a two-run homer in the same frame as the
Blue Demon’s took a 3-0 lead.
The Red Storm bounced back in the top of the sixth inning with
consecutive hits from Hill, Anguiano and Brandy
Reyes. Anguiano scored on a DePaul error, bringing in St.
John’s first run of game two.
DePaul scored its fourth and final run of the game on an error
at first base. The Blue Demon’s took game two, 4-1.
Lerch once again went the distance for the Red Storm, fanning
six in game two and pitching 10.2 innings overall between the pair
of games.
Overall, Reyes was 3-for-6 and Anguiano was 3-for-7 with three
runs and an RBI. Struble was 2-for-6 with 4 RBI.
