BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The St. John’s softball team
will focus on its home opening doubleheader against Rider, on
Wednesday, March 28 at Red Storm Field after dropping a pair of
games against LIU. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
Game One:
Long Island broke open a scoreless game in the middle of the fourth
inning. The Blackbirds scored two runs on a hard hit single from
Raylene Asman.
Kim Lerch worked her way out of
a bases loaded jam in the fifth frame and was effective over six
complete innings. She allowed only one earned run and struck out
four.
Senior Tami Hill once again got
the offense into motion with a double in the top of the sixth. Hill
scored on a single from Brandy
Reyes as the Red Storm battled back with its first run of
the game.
The Red Storm tried to put together a late rally in the seventh
inning when Danielle Estrada singled down the right field
line, but St. John’s eventually took a 2-1 loss.
Game Two:
The Blackbirds took an early 1-0 lead off a sacrifice fly
from Raylene Asman in the first inning.
LIU tacked on another run when the Red Storm made a defensive
error.
The Red Storm answered back with a run of its own in top of the
second. Tiffany D’Alessandro, who
was pinch running for Spring
Montgomery, made a beautiful slide at home plate to beat the
tag and score St. John’s first run of the game.
LIU scored four runs in the fourth inning, taking a dominating
6-1 lead.
Montgomery came in to relieve starting pitcher Lisa Geer in the middle of the fourth
inning with the bases loaded. Making her first appearance in the
circle this season, Montgomery tossed one full inning, giving up
one earned run.
Shauntaine Harris led off the
top of the fifth inning with a single through the gap in left
field. Harris advanced to second on a passed ball and Hill knocked
a single to left field to put runners on first and third. Harris
scored on an error by the shortstop and Loren Anguiano made it to first base
safely to keep the rally alive. The Red Storm was only able to
plate one run in the inning, putting the score at 6-2.
Geer came back into the game after LIU scored another two runs
in the fifth.
LIU’s Jessica DePippo’s two run homer in the sixth inning ended
the game. The Blackbirds won game two by a final score of 11-2.
The Red Storm will look towards its home opening doubleheader
tomorrow against Rider, beginning at 2:30 p.m., to get back on the
winning track.
