The St. John’s softball team split a pair of games against UConn
at Red Storm Field on Saturday afternoon. After dropping a 6-1
contest in game one, the Red Storm bounced back to take a 7-2
victory over the visiting Huskies. Sophomore Roxann Struble led St.
John’s to its first BIG EAST conference victory of the season as
she finished game two with two home runs and 5 RBI.
Game One:
Junior Danielle Estrada fired a
solo home run to left field in the bottom of the second inning to
give St. John’s a 1-0 lead. It was Estrada’s second career home run
as a member of the Red Storm and first of the season.
UConn’s Micah Truax had a solo home run in the fourth inning to
even the score up at one run a piece.
The Huskies took a 3-1 lead off of a two-run home run from
Jillian Ortega. Two innings later, Ortega’s seventh inning,
three-run homer sealed the game for UConn as the Huskies took a 6-1
victory.
Game Two:
The Red Storm took a 3-0 lead in the third frame when sophomore
Roxann Struble belted a three-run
home run over the center field fence. The long-ball was Struble’s
third of the season. She has had one home run in each of St. John’s
last three doubleheaders, two of which came against BIG EAST
opponents.
Junior co-captain Bionka King
led off the middle of the fifth inning with a double down the left
field line. Fellow co-captain Tami
Hill added another run for St. John’s when she plated King
with an infield single. Senior Loren
Anguiano followed up with her third double of the day, which
chased UConn starter Krista Michalczyk from the game. A sacrifice
fly from rookie Brandy Reyes put
the Red Storm up 5-0.
UConn broke through in the top of the fifth inning with an RBI
single from Jillian Ortega. The Huskies kept it going as Allie
Gendron’s triple scored UConn’s second run of the game.
Struble continued to swing a hot bat in game two, rocketing
another home run in the sixth inning. Her two-run shot gave the Red
Storm a five run cushion as St. John’s went on to win 7-2.
In the circle, junior hurler Lisa
Geer picked up her third win of the season. She tossed a
complete game, giving up only two runs.
