Last College: Campbell '02
At St. John's: First Season
St. John's University softball program hired Kathy Freaney as
their new assistant coach on November 6, 2004. Freaney will be
responsible for assisting with all aspects of recruiting, team
travel and administrative duties, while also handling the
day-to-day activities of the Red Storm outfield.
"We are very excited to have Kathy return to the St. John's
University softball program," Head Coach DeJong said. "Being from
the area, she is going to help significantly with local recruiting,
as well as the overall development of our program. In addition,
Kathy will be a great fit within our coaching staff, having coached
many of our current players during the 2003 season."
Freaney returns to St. John's, where she was a pitching coach in
2003, after spending last season as the first assistant at Furman
University in Greenville, SC. While at St. John's, she helped the
pitching staff to a 2.30 earned run average, including 14 shutouts,
while holding opponents to a .226 batting average.
Prior to arriving to St. John's in 2003, Freaney was a four-year
letterwinner and three-year captain at Campbell University in Buies
Creek, NC. During her freshman season, Freaney finished 7-7 with a
3.94 ERA, earning her first collegiate win against Radford. She was
forced to redshirt her sophomore season in 1999 due to injury, but
returned for two solid final seasons. As a junior, she appeared in
37 games, starting 29 and striking out 127, which ranks third
all-time in a single season. In her final year at Campbell, Freaney
went 10-16 with a 2.75 ERA, leading the team with 155 strikeouts,
first all-time in a single season, and 165 innings pitched.
A three-time NFCA Academic Scholar-Athlete (1999-2001) and
two-time Atlantic Sun All-Academic (1999-2000) selection, she ranks
among the top-five all-time at Campbell in numerous pitching
categories. She is the school's all-time leader with 396
strikeouts, while also ranking second in innings pitched (564.2)
and appearances (114), third in games started (86), fourth in wins
(40), and fifth in complete games (56) and shutouts (8).
A Long Beach, NY native, Freaney graduated with a bachelor of
arts in Spanish Education and earned her master's degree in
interdisciplinary studies from Campbell in 2002.
