The No. 24 St. John’s volleyball team will travel to Stony
Brook, N.Y. Tuesday to battle the Stony Brook University Seawolves.
The first serve of the match is scheduled for 7 p.m. This will be
the ninth time the two schools meet, with St. John’s holding a 7-1
series lead. The last time the two teams met was during the 2006
campaign, where St. John’s took the match, 3-0 (30-28, 30-26,
30-23), in front of their home crowd at Carnesecca Arena.
STORMWATCH
The St. John’s volleyball team has earned a spot in the
CSTV/American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25 Poll,
released on Monday. The Red Storm checked in at No. 24 with a 7-1
overall record. This is the second time in program history that St.
John’s is nationally ranked. The only other time they appeared in
the poll was on Nov. 13, 2006, when they debuted at No. 24.
The Red Storm most recently wrapped up play in the 2007 STJ
Volleyball invitational with a 3-1 victory over then-No. 24 Long
Beach State. With the win, St. John’s claimed the tournament title.
Along with being named to the All-Tournament Team, senior Hui Ping Huang was named Tournament MVP,
senior Wioleta Leszczynska was also
named to the All-Tournament Team.
Among the BIG EAST
The Red Storm volleyball team ranks first in the BIG EAST
in hitting percentage (.288), kills per game (18.29), and assists
per game (17.2), while ranking second in the BIG EAST with 17.21
digs per game. They also rank third in blocks per game with
2.86.
Among individual conference leaders, Huang ranks second in
hitting percentage with .452 and kills per game with 4.88.
Leszczynska is first overall with 14.52 assists per game, while
junior Lena Yee ranks third in digs
per game with 4.72. Senior Latoya
Blunt is fourth in the conference with 1.33 blocks per
game
On Deck
The St. John’s volleyball team will travel to University Park, Pa.
this weekend to compete in the 2007 Penn State Classic. The Red
Storm are slated to face-off against Virginia Commonwealth at Noon
on Friday, then face hosts Penn State at 6 p.m. St. John’s will
finish out the Classic with a match against Colgate on Saturday at
11 a.m.
