No. 24 St. John’s Volleyball Sweeps Stony Brook 3-0

STONY BROOK, N.Y.

The No. 24 St. John’s volleyball team defeated Stony Brook University, 3-0 (30-22, 30-18, 30-25), Tuesday night at the SBU Sports Complex in Stony Brook, N.Y. With the win, the Red Storm improved to 8-1 on the season and are currently riding a seven-game winning streak.

Seniors Dana DeMayo and Wioleta Leszczynska both recorded double-doubles for the Red Storm. DeMayo had a team-high 14 kills and tied for the match-high in digs with 11, tying Leszczynska and junior Lena Yee. Leszczynska chipped in with a match-high 39 assists.

In game one, St. John’s came out quick, building an 11-4 lead before the Seawolves called a time out to slow down the Red Storm’s momentum. St. John’s was right back at it after the short breather, however, and continued to expand their lead, going up as much as 11 points, 26-15, at one point. A kill by junior Valeria Kovaleva ended the first game, which St. John’s won 30-22.

Game two was closer in the beginning, with the Red Storm maintaining the lead throughout after taking over at 2-1. Three kills early by Leszczynska helped lead St. John’s to a 13-9 advantage before Stony Brook burned their first time out. But Leszczynska continued to have a great game, recording 11 assists, 5 digs and 4 kills, while senior Latoya Blunt chipped in five of her 13 kills on the night during game two. St. John’s cruised on to a 30-18 win, taking a 2-0 match lead into the locker room.

The third and final game was the closest in score, but St. John’s had started it out with a big 12-4 lead. The Seawolves battled back however, but could never get closer than four points from the Red Storm. St. John’s was able to hold off Stony Brook for a 30-25 game three win, sweeping the match, 3-0.

For the Seawolves, senior Morgan Sweany had a match-high 16 kills and senior Kaitlin Deutsch had a team high 38 assists. The loss drops Stony Brook to 3-5 overall.

Up next, the Red Storm will travel to University Park, Pa. this weekend for the Penn State Classic. St. John’s is slated to face-off against Virginia Commonwealth Friday at Noon and hosts Penn State at 6 p.m. They will finish out the Classic on Saturday with a match against Colgate at 11 a.m.
