QUEENS, N.Y. (March 5, 2023) – The St. John's softball team fell in its final pair of games against Drexel and Quinnipiac on Sunday in the final day of the Red Storm Classic at Red Storm Field.
Game 1
The first game of the day featured a pitcher's duel between the Red Storm and the Dragons.
Freshman Loreley Francia began strong in her first collegiate start for the Red Storm. The Spring, Tex. native did not allow the Dragons a hit through five innings of play. Francia finished with five and a third innings pitched, six strikeouts, three hits and just one walk.
Drexel starter Jessica Schabel was nearly flawless, not allowing the Johnnies offense to ever get started. She allowed just three hits in seven innings, striking out three Johnnies and walking one.
London Jarrard reached base three times for the Red Storm but was able to score on any occasion.
In the third inning, the Red Storm threatened with a pair of runners on after a Jarrard hit by pitch, and a Katie Whittaker single. But, the pair was stranded by Schabel.
The Dragons were the first to break through the pitcher's duel, with a three-run sixth inning. After a one-out triple, Drexel strung together a pair of singles, ending the day for Francia. Carolina Zamudio entered the circle, surrendering a double to plate both of Francia's runners. Zamudio then closed the inning preventing any more runs.
After a Sabrina Seaton lead-off walk in the final inning, the Red Storm were unable to capitalize, stranding her at third and dropping the game to Drexel, 3-0.
Game 2
After a scoreless first, Quinnipiac pushed across a pair of runs in the second frame. The Bobcats led off the inning with a two-out single. Quinnipiac scored the first run of the game on an RBI-single by Sofia Vega. With runners at second and third, Fogg grounded softly to Jarrard at shortstop, where she tagged the runner occupying second, allowing the Bobcat runner to cross the plate for the second run of the game.
In the bottom half of the frame, the Red Storm created a strong scoring chance after a lead-off single and double by Anese Thompson and Peyton Cody. After a pair of outs, Maeve Marra drew a walk to load the bases. The Red Storm tried to cause chaos on the bases, with Cody drawing a throw to second, but it resulted in Thompson getting caught in a pickle between home and third, ultimately getting tagged to end the inning.
The Bobcats opened the fifth inning with a trio of singles to load the bases with no outs. Red Storm starting hurler, Hannah Mearns, was able to limit the damage, and allow just one Bobcat to cross the plate.
Quinnipiac tacked on four insurance runs in the top of the seventh to extend its lead to 7-0. Zamudio entered into the circle for the second time on the day, to get the final two outs of the inning.
The Red Storm were unable to cause any traction on the base paths in the final two innings, stranding Cody at second after her double in the sixth inning. Jaclyn Gonzalez retired the Johnnies in order in the bottom of the seventh to clinch the 7-0 victory for the Bobcats.
St. John's will be back in action on Friday in its BIG EAST season opening series against the Providence Friars. The Red Storm will play the Friars on three consecutive days opening on Friday at 1 p.m., broadcasted on FloSports.
