London Jarrard belted her fifth home run of the season
STORRS, CONN. – The St. John's softball team fell on Friday night, 2-1, to UConn at Burrill Family Field.
With the defeat, the Red Storm falls to 14-18 overall and 4-6 in BIG EAST play. The second-place Huskies improve to 10-3 in the conference and 23-10 on the year.
Loreley Francia earned her second BIG EAST start against going the distance for all six innings while notching six punch-outs.
London Jarrard provided a spark for the Red Storm in the first inning with a solo-blast to right to give the Johnnies the first lead of the ballgame. The no-doubter was Jarrard's fifth home run this season.
UConn scratched its first run across in the second inning. After a pair of walks, Lexi Hastings had a single up-the-middle knocked down by Natalie Casto on a very impressive play. Casto errantly flipped it to second allowing the Huskies runner on third to score tying the game at one apiece.
UConn starter Hope Jenkins retired 12 of the last 13 batters she faced not allowing a hit in her final three innings of work. Her counterpart, Francia, retired 11 of 12 dating from the second to sixth inning.
The score remained tied going into the Huskies' sixth inning. Red Storm catcher Anese Thompson nabbed Giuliana Abruscoto trying to steal second for Thompson's first collegiate caught baserunner. The next batter Savannah Ring broke the 1-1 tie with a solo shot to left center.
Hurler Jenkins was removed for a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the sixth, bringing Meghan O'Neil to the circle to close out the seventh. O'Neil struck out the first two Johnnies on full counts before getting a fly out to notch her third save and the Huskies 2-1 victory.
The three-game series will continue tomorrow with game two set to start at 1 p.m. at Burrill Family Field.
