Peyton Cody logged a pair of doubles in her third multi-hit season
STORRS, CONN. – For the second straight game, the St. John's softball team fell 2-1 to UConn at Burrill Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Storm drops to 14-19 overall and 4-7 in BIG EAST play. The now first-place Huskies improve to 10-3 in the conference and 24-10 on the season.
In a game of defense, Hannah Mearns got the nod in her 13th start of the season. The junior struck out five and allowed just two runs on four hits.
Peyton Cody notched her third multi-hit game of the season with a pair of doubles in the final innings of the ballgame.
The Red Storm was able to put traffic on the base paths in every inning, but the Huskies defense came up with dazzling plays in crucial situations to prevent any big innings by the Red Storm.
The Huskies broke onto the scoreboard in the first scoring two runs on a triple by Rosie Garcia, her second of the year.
In the next half, the Johnnies responded with a run to cut the deficit to 2-1. Sydney Totarsky led off the frame with a single up the middle. After being advanced on a sac bunt by Maeve Marra, Totarsky scored on a fielding error by the Huskies center fielder.
Anese Thompson asserted her dominance behind the plate yet again throwing out her second baserunner, this time at third base in the second inning. The call on the field was safe before Coach Grace Kramer asked for her first replay as acting head coach and the call was overturned. Mearns used the momentum booster and escaped the jam striking out the final Husky of the inning.
In the top of the fifth, the Johnnies had one of their best scoring chances of the afternoon. The Huskies called in reliever Meghan O'Neil ending the day of starter Payton Kinney. After retiring the first two Johnnies of the inning, Thompson reached on a walk, and a ground-rule double by Cody pitted the pair in scoring position with two outs. O'Neil forced a Red Storm pop up to end the Johnnies' scoring threat.
In the sixth inning, after Natalie Casto reached on an error London Jarrard was intentionally walked. For the second time in three innings, McKenzie Mason ended the inning on a web-gem play this time diving to corral a deep fly ball by Jess Bianco. Mason also nearly robbed Jarrard of a two-out home run in the fourth inning.
In the seventh inning, Amy Mallah led off with an infield single, but was doubled off on a hard-hit line drive by Thompson that was caught by the second baseman. Down to her final strike, Cody registered her second double of the contest to keep the inning alive. O'Neil continued to battle and struck out the final Johnnie of the game to secure the 2-1 Huskies victory.
The series finale is tomorrow with game three set to start at 11 a.m. at Burrill Family Field.
