Sydney Totarsky belted her first BIG EAST home run
STORRS, CONN. – The St. John's softball team dropped the series finale at UConn, 4-1, at Burrill Field on Easter Sunday.
The Red Storm falls to 14-20 overall and 4-8 in BIG EAST play. The now first-place Huskies improve to 11-3 in the conference and 25-10 on the season.
Hannah Mearns struck out five, walked none and allowed one run in six innings of relief.
After leading off the game with a walk, London Jarrard stole a pair of bases to regain the team lead with 20 stolen bases on the season.
The Huskies neutralized the Johnnies scoring chance in the first inning, and used that momentum to plate three Huskies in the first frame. A pair of walks to start the game scored on back-to-back UConn hits to take an early 2-0 lead. The Huskies added a third run later in the inning on a sac fly.
Sydney Totarsky started the second inning off strong for the Red Storm with an absolute blast into the visiting bullpen in left-center field. Totarsky's first BIG EAST round-tripper shortened the Huskies lead to 3-1.
In the third inning, the St. John's defense made a pair of web gems to limit the Huskies to a lone run. Cassidy Stouffer dove towards the middle of the field and spun to fire to first to record the first out of the inning on a UConn RBI-groundout. The next batter hit a sharp fly ball to foul territory where a sliding Jess Bianco made a spectacular catch to retire the Huskies dangerous fourth hitter.
UConn starter Hope Jenkins settled in allowing just two Johnnies to reach base in the final four innings. Jenkins struck out eight and allowed just two hits, both to Totarsky, in her fifth complete game effort of the season.
St. John's will host Fordham on Wednesday afternoon at Red Storm Field. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. The Red Storm won the first meeting in the Bronx earlier this season, 9-0 in five innings.
