The Red Storm will be in the BIG EAST Tournament for the first time since 2019
The Red Storm (22-27, 8-13) earned the fifth-seed in this week's BIG EAST Tournament. With DePaul completing the sweep of Georgetown earlier in the day, the Demons will own the sixth seed. The Johnnies first round matchup will be set for 12 p.m. on Wednesday against fourth-seeded Butler at Burrill Family Field hosted by UConn.
We went into today counting on us to win, and that's what we did." said Bob Guerriero. "We proved to ourselves and the non-believers that this team could make it to Storrs. The journey isn't over yet, it has just begun!"
London Jarrard's seventh round-tripper of the season couldn't have come at a better time giving the Red Storm the lead for the final time in the ballgame.
The Red Storm went back-to-back for the second time this season, with Katie Whittaker following Jarrard's three-run homer with a four-bagger of her own.
Cassidy Stouffer extended her hitting streak to ten games, the longest by any Johnnies this season.
Jess Bianco notched her third three or more hit game, going 3-for-4, swiping two bags and scoring a pair of runs. She is just five bags short of the St. John's single season record of 46 set by Donna Dosanjos in 1990.
Creighton jumped ahead in the first inning to take an early lead. Cayla Nielsen led off the frame with a triple and scored on a sac fly by the next batter. Hannah Mearns limited the damage and exited the inning on a fly out to center.
In the next half, the Red Storm responded with four crucial runs. After the first out, the next eight Johnnies reached safely. Stouffer started the comeback with a walk to increase her on-base streak to ten. A single followed by another walk loaded the bases. Starter Natalie Puchino plunked Sabrina Seaton to tie the game at one. She would be removed for a reliever who preceded to hit a pair of Johnnies in her first three pitches, extending the Red Storm lead to 3-1. A wild pitch and a walk ended the day for the CU reliever, making Creighton go to their third pitcher in the inning. Jena Lawrence entered the circle and promptly ended the Red Storm's four-run inning.
The Johnnies added on a run in the fourth inning to take a 5-2 lead. Bianco singled and stole second for the second time on the day and 41st of the season. She later scored on an RBI single by Katie Whittaker.
Creighton shortened the deficit to 5-3 in the fifth inning. The Jays led off the inning with a double and two batters later scored on an up-the-middle single. But, the Bluejays didn't stop there, and added a pair of runs to tie the game at five. Back-to-back singles crossed the fourth and fifth Jays' runs of the game to deadlock the contest at five.
With the game tied, and a BIG EAST Tournament berth on the line, the Red Storm stepped up to retake the lead in the sixth inning. A pair of singles set the table for Jarrard to break the tie with a three-run homer! Four pitches later, Whittaker blasted her own round-tripper to extend the lead to 9-5.
The Red Storm tacked on three insurance runs in the seventh on a three-run, two-out rally. After as trio of walks, Anese Thompson ripped a two-RBI single to cushion the lead to 11-5. After a hIt by pitch, Sydney Totarsky drew a walk to force in the 12th run of the game for the Red Storm.
With the bases loaded, Mearns re-entered the circle to close the game out for the Red Storm. Creighton added a pair of runs on a single and a fielder's choice, but Mearns forced a fly out to center to send St. John's to Storrs as the fifth seed!
St. John's will travel to Storrs, Conn. for the BIG EAST Tournament at Burrill Family Field. The Red Storm will be the fifth-seed and its first round matchup is set to be against the Bulldogs of Butler, the only conference team the Johnnies did not play this season.
